Bad Measurer

Salam!

Bismillah

I'm not very good at this "recipe thing" you guys...

When I cook food (especially things with meat... which I pretty much everything I cook) I don't really write down how much spices and stuff I put in. I just dump stuff until it looks/smells right. I have a lot of food with pictures that I have made, but no recipes to go with them... That makes it really hard to do these blog posts sometimes.

Does it bother you guys when I say "add *these spices* however much you want"? I know if I was cooking from a recipe it would bother me but I want to know what you think. Should I try harder to keep track of how much I'm putting in?

This is how I usually tell if I have enough spices on the meat:
1. can i see the spices? are they evenly distributed over the surface of the meat?
2. does it still smell like meat? (I know this sounds weird, but it works for me) Basically I smell it and if it still smells like raw chicken or raw lamb or raw beef, then I add more spices. Usually I add a little vinegar to the meat and a little olive oil, so if it smells like either one of those I add more spices too.

It isn't very scientific, but it works.

When you guys cook, do you usually measure everything out or do you just eyeball it?

I use a tsp spoon , especialy when following a recipe but as you said when making my own concution it I always end up adding a few extra of this and that, and by the time I have finished I have n o idea how much i have added

I don't really measure either. I go by smell and look too. high five! And I just get use to improvising everything that it feels weird when I'm measuring. When it is a recipe off the internet, I like to have an idea if its like a first time trying the recipe but if its something I already know how to make, I don't really need to measure.

Peanutts: Exactly, I just really lose track...

Winning-over: yay high five!! :-D Yeah it is exactly the same with me and really... I never do a dish the same twice.

Im a bit the same. I know if Im making curry, its 2x the amount of Garam Masala than other spices I put in..... Maybe that is a way you could give it? in comparison to the other spices!

Whenever I see a recipe I like, I use it but I add my own amount of spices because sometimes i think they dont use enough! But thats just me!! :D I would really love it if you said abit of this or alot of that because I usually end up putting whatever I think is best anyway. :D

It definitely doesn't bother me! I haven't seen much of your recipes, but really i think it's fine. Write the recipe how ever you want to write it, and if we do get confused, we can always ask right? Cook how you are comfortable cooking, don't make it hard on yourself! =) I think it's really nice to share recipes, so other people can try it as well! Jazakillah. =) Btw, i have some recipes that i can share with you too! I don't have a blog, but i can totally share it by email if you likee! And if it's a recipe I wrote, then it might not have measurements either. Xo. =)

I would love it if you shared some recipes!! I'm always looking for new stuff plus I think it would be fun to have guest posts on this blog since I have to wrestle with my recipes before I post them, lol.
